Quadrophilia

One of our favorite summer concerts series, Saturdays Off the 405, kicks off the 2013 season this weekend with Quadron doing a free outdoor performance on the gorgeous Getty Center grounds. The soulful Danish duo consists of singer Coco O (who also appears on the star-studded Great Gatsby soundtrack) and musician/producer Robin Hannibal. It’s good to see that the recent success of Hannibal’s other sultry outfit Rhye hasn’t kept him from churning out new Quadron material. Check out the video for their new single “Hey Love” below: The Getty event officially runs from 6 – 9pm, but the popularity of these free concerts often results in the the museum hitting max capacity quite early. Expect (more than the usual LA) heavy traffic on the nearby freeway and Sepulveda pass and plan to arrive well before 6pm if you want to make the cut. Between the music, the view (the architecture, the sunset, the gardens, hell even the 405 looks pretty riding the tram up the ridge to the museum), and the carefree vibe these evenings are not to be missed, especially if you have any out-of-towners visiting. Mark your calendar for next month’s concert with live production wunderkind Robert Delong playing on Sat 6/15 as well!

A good example of the client going the extra mile to make the content enjoyable: Kudos to RSA Films, Damian Lewis (of Homeland), and Lana Del Rey.

Funky Friday

When I first heard “Shuggie,” the lead single off of Foxygen’s debut We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic, their psychedelic retro funk pop reminded me a bit of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, with the biggest distinction being the production aesthetic (classic 60’s rock vs. the latter’s lo-fi garage). I was therefore pleased to learn that not only was UMO putting out their succinctly titled II via Jagjaguwar, making the 2 bands labelmates, but furthermore that they would tour together promoting their twin 2013 releases. So tonight’s show at the Echoplex is one we’ve had firmly circled on our calendar at the Woofer offices for awhile. Advance tix are sold out but there will be a small amount made available at the door. If you’re in the area, we’ll be pre-gaming across the street at El Prado. Should you have other plans this holiday weekend, both albums are now officially out and would make a great soundtrack to a road trip, bbq, or however else you plan on spending what looks to be a beautiful sunny weekend in LA!

Eons ago the Mayans predicted that 2012 would be a momentous year, and we here at Woofer could not agree more. While our inaugural year kept us busy, the soundtrack to 2012 kept us going with a healthy balance of impressive debuts (Alt-J, Frank Ocean) and strong comebacks (Fiona Apple, Cat Power), who dropped not only great singles but solid albums from top to bottom. So whether you’re packing your bags to head out of town, or are stuck in an edit bay looking for the perfect song to make your scene come together, or are in need of a playlist for a holiday/end of the world party, please enjoy our special end of the year mixtape, featuring our favorite 25 singles from 2012.   Happy Holidays from everyone at Woofer! BONUS: Enjoy this hilarious montage of clips from the film 2012, consisting entirely of close-ups of the actors’ reactions and none of the blockbuster effects. It gives true meaning to the term “disaster porn.” Watch it through to the end!

October Surprise!

After a whirlwind week running around NY for the CMJ Music Marathon I saw lots of bands I’d been looking forward to like Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Dent May, and (the about-to-supernova) Icona Pop. Thankfully, unlike Lance Armstrong and the Boston Marathon, no one was disqualified for PED’s. However, my favorite aspect of the festival is all the unexpected discoveries of acts playing the slots immediately before or after your band of choice, which is how I chanced upon the 17yr old kids in The Orwells (think The Black Lips pre-high school expulsion). That, or passing up surefire crowd-pleasers like GZA doing Liquid Swords to see Australian knob-twiddling wunderkind Flume on a friend’s recommendation (and being so happy I did I saw him twice in one night). Now that I’ve managed to reacquaint myself with sun, sleep, and sobriety back in Los Angeles, my iTunes is bursting with new music, both from CMJ and recent releases that we’ve been cranking out at the Woofer offices by the likes of Tame Imapala, Black Moth Super Rainbow, and the all-star soundtrack to RZA’s directorial debut Man With An Iron Fist. So in what I hope will be a game-changer for your fall music enjoyment, I’m pleased to present you with the Woofer October Surprise Mix!   (Click the link above for automatic download)

28 Years Later

Now in its 28th year, 2012’s Twilight Concert Series goes out with a bang on Thursday Sept 6th with a great  lineup of LA bands for the summer finale. The Santa Monica Pier should provide a fitting backdrop for headliner Best Coast’s reverb-drenched wall of sound. Opening act NO has also been making waves in the local scene and deserves you ducking out of the office a little earlier than you (maybe) otherwise would.

Labor Day Soundtrack

Other Music has served up Nude Beach’s II just in time to become the soundtrack to your Labor Day Weekend. Their rootsy, lo-fi but enthusiastic sound will allow lovers of hipster-approved bands like The Black Lips and The Alabama Shakes as well as classic rock radio stalwarts like CCR and Tom Petty to finally nod in agreement over some beers and bbq. Yes, it’s a cool sound (and formula) that’s been used before, but practically every song on the sophomore album has real hooks, a commitment to craft that is all-too-rare these days.
