Our latest Superbowl ad has been getting a lot of love on the interwebs. We’d like to think that it has something to do with our music and sound, but credit must also be given to BSSP for crafting another great spot in their long-running campaign for Priceline, featuring the hilariously self-aware William Shatner as The Negotiator.
Check out the write ups in Adweek, Sports Illustrated, CNN, and of course, Trek Today (as if you didn’t already have that as your browser homepage).
“Wet Dream: A Skateboard Tale” debuts on iTunes today along with some very cool behind the scenes extras, which is great because the film features some unheard of stunts and visual effects.
Seems like we’re finally having a sorely needed rainy season here in LA, which is fitting given that the short film I music supervised, “Wet Dream: A Skateboard Tale,” debuts next Tuesday on iTunes (trailer above).
This month’s mix features a lot of great hip-hop from the likes of Serengeti (in his Ditka-lovin’ Kenny Dennis mode), the Premier & Royce Da 5’9 combo PRhyme, and another live band-backed record from Wu’s Ghostface Killah. Also some great electronic tunes from UK producer Clark, Chromatics, and Royksopp, plus a track from Dylan’s New(found) Basement Tapes.

LA Rain = SNOW in the mountains! Check out this lil ditty we did with Abstract Rude for Mammoth Mountain’s new season.
We love snowboarding almost as much as we do music, so when the good folks at Nemo asked us to create a hip-hop track for Mammoth Mountain‘s upcoming season, we couldn’t wait to get started. We threw down a fun head-bobbin’ beat built around some sax, enlisted the deep-voiced Abstract Rude to rock the mic, and now we’re excited to finally share with you the results.
In addition to the 60 second video below, we’ve created a full length single that’ll soon be available on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc., but you can download it for FREE right now from the music player at bottom!
Muddy Waters is definitely on my musical Mt. Rushmore, so I was thrilled that we were able to use his classic “Mannish Boy” on this ad for the Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter of the Bay Area (special thanks to Ryan Fitch and BMG Chrysalis for helping make it happen).
Hometown hero Lyrics Born (Blackalicious, Latryx, Quannum) also showed some love by doing the voiceover.
Our Bigelow spot has been getting a lot of love online! It was an editor’s pick in ad industry showcase Creativity. There’s an article on the backstory in Fast Company. It’s also been mentioned in dozens of pop culture mags and design blogs like Juxtapoz, It’s Nice That, Freshness Mag, Baller Status, Cube Me, etc.
If you’re not one for clickin’ links, here’s the full length version:
It’s pretty rare to be in Los Angeles and wish you were in a different climate. I’ll own up to some jealousy when director Adam Brummond first showed us the footage for the 4 ads he shot for Polaris’ new snowmobile line, though. These guys had a powder paradise all to the themselves.
Adam was determined to not have any music on the spots, nor was there any dialogue or VO (thanks must also be given to the client for going along with this approach). Instead of going the obvious route and slapping some rock tracks over the picture, we were tasked to come up with a sonic aesthetic that would unite the 4 commercials but separate Polaris from the competition. So, we were encouraged to go for broke with the sound design and created huge, epic, heavily stylized SFX that played off the slo-mo shots and loud/quiet dynamic.
Hope you enjoy watching them as much as we enjoyed making them. I still want to ride one of those machines, though!
When I first heard the premise for Spike Jonze’s “Her,” it brought to mind the 30 minute short film we’d worked on together a few years earlier called “I’m Here,” about a pair of robots who fall in love in an LA of the not too distant future. Here’s a recent article in Slate that recaps all of Spike’s shorts, several of which I had the pleasure to music supervise, and how they lead back to “Her.”
The article includes full length versions of the shorts, but here’s the “I’m Here” trailer , which btw won Best Original Music at the 2010 AICP Awards (it was actually sponsored by — in a remarkably hands off fashion — Absolut Vodka).
2013 was a great year of growth for Woofer, which is why it’s so rewarding to start off the new year with the Gatorade ad we worked on airing during tonight’s College Football (BCS) Championship Game. The spot shows all the hard, dirty work that must be put in behind the scenes, far from the bright lights and adoring fans, in order to achieve success. We were thrilled when TBWA\Chiat\Day asked us to find the right song for it.
In addition to having thematically spot-on lyrics, we also knew that the song had to reflect the natural, minimal, yet still rousing music that’s been the hallmark of Gatorade’s recent run of commercials (“Lightning Bolt,””Evolve,” etc.). Once we came across the U.S. Army Airborne Rangers cadence “Hard Work,” we knew we’d found the perfect piece. Recorded live in the field, the track has a grit and earnestness that was exactly what we were looking for.
Enjoy!
